impalement

(UG)

Police probe javelin impalement
Kyodo
HIROSHIMA — Police said Tuesday they are investigating an accident in which a javelin thrown by a college student seriously injured a high school student in Hiroshima Prefecture.

The accident occurred Monday morning at Fukuyama Heisei University when the 19-year-old male sophomore threw a 2.6-meter-long javelin toward a sandpit some 60 meters away but missed the target and hit a 15-year-old girl walking nearby.

She was taken to a hospital with the javelin still stuck in the left side of her head. Details of her condition have not been reported.

The college student was found to have called out a warning that he was about to throw a javelin. The police plan to question college officials as well as the victim and other college students who were at the scene to determine whether the college took appropriate safety measures.

The high school student is a manager of her school's track and field team. She and some 50 team members were using the college field in the city of Fukuyama for training during repair work to their school's grounds. The accident occurred when they were heading home, the police said.
