Blake smokes Bolt with 9.75
KINGSTON — The Fastest Man in the World wasn't the fastest man in Jamaica on Friday night.
That honor goes to Yohan Blake, who blew away Usain Bolt out of the starting blocks and finished the 100-meter final in 9.75 seconds to upset the world-record holder by 0.11 seconds in the Jamaican Olympic Trials.
A shocker?
Well, that's for the world to decide. One thing for sure, however, is that the calculus for the London Olympics has changed dramatically.
"Nine-point-seven-five, it's awesome," Blake said. "I won the world championship, so I've got that. Now, I'm the national champion for Jamaica, so I've got that. And now, I go into the Olympics like this."
Blake is, indeed, the reigning world champion, but that victory came with an asterisk because Bolt didn't run that night after being disqualified for a false start. This was their first rematch, their first real race since then.
Bolt was considered the favorite, not only because of his world record — 9.58 seconds — but because Blake, his training partner, had never run below 9.82 in his life.

まずはここでのsmokeの意味について考察していきます。もちろん、「タバコを吸う」の意味ではありません。そこで辞書で調べますと、smoke(煙)は「暗愚、はかなさなどの象徴として考えられる」(『ジーニアス英和辞典』、第4版、大修館書店)と掲載されていたので、「ブレーク選手は9秒75というタイムでボルト選手の存在を霞ませた」というような解釈ができます。しかし何か腑に落ちないのでもう少し調べてみると、俗語で「（人）に楽勝［圧勝］する、（人）を徹底的に打ち負かす」という意味もありました (英辞郎 on the WEBより)。よってここでは「ブレーク選手がボルト選手に9.75というタイムで圧勝」という意味になり、またその結果について読み手に儚さを感じさせることができます。
アスタリスクは私たちは注などを添える時、注、省略、非文法表現を示す時などに用いる時などに使いますので、ここでは文字通りwith an asteriskは「注目すべき」という意味(『ジーニアス英和辞典』、第4版、大修館書店)です。以前GP先輩がasteriskを使った表現を取り上げておられるのでこちらも一緒に確認しておきます。(EnDough)
