AKB48's latest single, "Manatsu no Sounds Good!" which came with ballots for the popularity vote, sold a record-breaking 1.62 million copies in its first week of release, according to Oricon Inc.

Wednesday's poll had 237 contenders, including other localized sister groups in other cities in Japan, such as SKE48 in Nagoya.

One of the perks for the top ranked vote-winners is appearing in the next AKB48 single.
