Assailant headed toward Ikebukuro after stabbing at Shibuya Station: police

An assailant who stabbed a 53-year-old man at Shibuya Station in Tokyo on May 21 switched train lines after the attack and fled toward Ikebukuro, police investigators have disclosed.

Police reached the conclusion after analyzing security camera footage showing a man believed to be the attacker. They are continuing to analyze the footage as they try to track the assailant down.

Metropolitan Police Department officials said the attacker stabbed the victim in his right side on the down escalator between the fourth and fifth basement floors at Shibuya Station on May 21, and fled after reaching the platform of the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line.

Security camera images indicate that the man made his way up stairs to the Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line. After boarding a train, he got off at Nagatacho Station. He then changed to the Yurakucho Line and headed toward Ikebukuro, police said.

It has emerged that the attacker may have briefly entered a bathroom on the fourth basement floor of Shibuya Station immediately after the stabbing. Bloodstains were found on a toilet seat and on toilet paper, and police suspect the man may have wiped blood off the knife in the bathroom.
