pin down

Sergei ProkofievのPiano Concertos輸入盤のCDを購入しました。そのliner notesからの落ち穂拾いに挑戦です。

Sergei Prokofiev may prove to have contributed more new music to the standard “classical“ repertoires than any of his contemporaries, yet he remains a difficult man to pin down. The innovator who delighted to offend was also a traditionalist hankering after simpler, clearer melodies. Like Beethoven, he completed five concertos for his own instruments, losing interest once he was no longer playing much in public.
そもそもpin downは「ピン（画鋲）ではりつける」が原義で、そこから「〈事実など〉をはっきりさせる」「分類する」「カテゴリー化する」という意味が派生してきました。「英辞郎on the web」にはdifficult to pin downで「定義するのが難しい」とありますが、要するに彼をどのジャンルに入れるのかが難しいということになると思います。彼の曲はクラシックでもあり、新しくもあるからです。(Minnesota)
