a hot chestnutは「火中のクリ」のことです。ここでは少し形が変わっていますが，英語ではpull one’s chestnuts out of the fireで「火中のクリを拾う，〈人〉のために手先となって危険な仕事をする」という形でしばしば用いられます（『ジーニアス英和大辞典』大修館書店）。この名句、もともとはAesop's Fables "The monkey and the cat"から来たものです。原文は" to pull chestnuts from the embers amongst which they are roasting"です。（Sugiuchi）
