Ralph Lauren: Masterpiece Theater

New York Timesには、ラルフ・ローレンのショーの記事がありました。今回のテーマは、グレン・チェックの生地や記事の内容から察すると「ちょっとモッズ感覚を持たせて、エスタブリッシュしたアッパー・ミドル・クラスやニューヨーク郊外の裕福なミドル・クラス」という感じでしょうか。記事で言及されているDownton AbbyやThe Great Gatsbyからもそれがわかります。

学部時代にシェイクスピアのOthelloを専門的に勉強したので、記事にあるhunting-in-the-moorsに惹かれましたが、ここでは、少し意味を確認するだけにします。このmoorは「荒地、狩猟場」といった意味で使われていて、a hunting-in-the-moorで「狩猟するときのような」という意味で使われています。狩りといえば、やはり裕福な中流階級以上の趣味と言えます。

そして、ローレン氏が小説やドラマの登場人物になりきっている様子からもわかります。次のシーズンに登場するラルフ・ローレンの新作が待ち遠しく思います。私もグレーのジャケットに紫や赤の差し色(accent colour)を使って着たいな、と思います。(Othello)

The theme song from “Downton Abbey” set the tone for where Ralph Lauren was going this morning.

The look wasn’t exactly dowager countess, or anything like the scene in which the family reacts to Lady Sybil’s harem pants, but you got a hunting-in-the-moors feeling from Mr Lauren’s glen plaids, tweeds, argyle stockings and cloche hats. There was also a bit of “The Great Gatsby” thrown in for good measure, and then the soundtrack switched to the strings of “Eleanor Rigby,” and things got just a touch mod. The all-gray glen plaid checks on double-breasted coats and suits were offset by the pop of colorful mittens and scarves, in pink, purple or red.

This season, Mr. Lauren also got into character, taking his bow in a gray suit and tie.
