The untrained eye, groan and stone-cold[Othelloの拾った英語表現２]

先ほどの投稿に続いて，同じ記事から英語表現を拾います。この記事に登場する人と同じような考えを持っていたので，とても楽しく読めました。それでは，赤字で示した箇所をご覧ください。

It is a Saturday afternoon in west London, and five pounds has purchased entry into the Olympia record fair. The untrained eye sees perhaps as many as 200 stalls, each groaning under the weight of an awful lot of old vinyl and CDs, and in front of which gather men (and they are mostly men) in winter coats on the prowl for a stone-cold, ultra-rare collectable. When they fail in locating one – and they mostly do, stone-cold, ultra-rare collectables being hard to come by – they invariably settle for an obscure bargain in the hope that one day it too shall attain collectable status.

まず赤字で示した文の頭。The untrained eyeです。eyeが単数形なのが気になります。eyeは，大修館書店の第４版『ジーニアス英和辞典』の第４義の定義に従えば，「見分ける力」という意味があることがわかります。説明によれば，「この意味では，目の「働き」が問題になっているので単数形」とあります。LDOCE 4th Eds. では，第２義に“way of seeing/understanding [countable usually singular]　a particular way of seeing, judging, or understanding something”と定義されています。さらに，ここでのuntrainedは，否定を表すun-がついているので「訓練されていない，素人の」の意味になります。これを踏まえるとThe untrained eyeは「素人目」と訳せます。本文の文脈では「パッと見た感じ」と訳すとちょうど良いかもしれません。

続いて，each groaning under the weight of an awful lot of old vinyl and CDsの箇所。ここでは，LDOCEの定義が一番しっくりくる気がします。LDOCEの定義よると第４義に“[intransitive] if a table groans with food there is a very large amount of food on it”とあります。つまり「それぞれの露店では，恐ろしいほどのレコードとCDで埋め尽くされている」と解釈できます。また，ここでは，groan underのかたちを採っていることから，レコードやCDが山のように積み上げられて(痛んで)いる様子もわかります。

文の最後の箇所です。男たちが探し回っている超レアものに，なぜかstone-coldが付いています。結論から申し上げると，レコード・フェアは真冬に行われる事を踏まえると，超レアもののレコードが，掘り出されるまでずっとレコ箱の中にあって，文字通り「石のように冷たくなった」ことを指しています。

すべてを踏まえると「慣れない目でパッと見た感じ200店舗ほどあり，それぞれの露店ではすさまじいほどのレコードとCDの山がひしめいている。そして，店先には石のように冷たくなった超レアものの商品を見つけに，コートを着た男たち(ほとんど男ばっかり)が集まっている」と訳せます。次のWhen they fail in locatingから始まる文は，きっとレコ屋巡りや古本屋巡りが好きな方は気持ちがわかるはず。(Othello)
