久しぶりにDaily Mailのサイトを覗いていたら面白い記事がありました。

Doug Perrine had a close encounter with the elusive creatures when they ventured into the warmer waters of the St Lawrence River in North America, hunting for food.
The sharks usually eat large seals but have even been known to polish off polar bears and reindeer.
But 59-year-old Mr Perrine, from Kailua Kona, Hawaii, was brave enough to swim to just a metre away from the giants to get his shots.

記事によるとこのサメはアイスランドではさまざまな使い道があって、とくにサメの肉はアイスランドの国民食(the national dish)とのことです。

さて、なんでもない基本表現ですが、記事に出てくるpolish offの意味合いが気になります。他動詞polishは、「磨く、研ぐ、つやを出す」、自動詞polishは「つやが出る；上品になる」という意味ですが、ここではoffが付くことで「さっさと平らげる」という意味の口語表現になります(『リーダーズ英和辞典』研究社)。LDOCE 4th Ed.で意味を確認してみますと、以下の意味がありました。このアメリカ英語での意味合いも興味深く思えます。

polish somebody/something ↔ off
a) to finish food, work etc quickly or easily: Sam polished off the rest of the pizza.
b) American English to kill or defeat a person or animal when they are weak or wounded: He was polished off with a shotgun blast to the face.
