打倒iPad。わたしも非常にお世話になっている――金欠のもと――Amazonから新製品が登場します。今回は，週刊新聞The Economistから英語表現を拾います。
On Fire
Many other companies, including Korea’s Samsung, Canada’s Research in Motion, the maker of BlackBerry phones, and America’s Hewlett-Packard, have tried and failed to dislodge Apple. Although the company’s share of the overall tablet market has shrunk somewhat, it is still huge. Gartner, a research firm, reckons that Apple will account for nearly three quarters of the 64m tablets that it estimates will be sold this year. But if there is one company that can cause the denizens of Apple’s headquarters to lose some sleep at night it is undoubtedly Amazon.

None of this makes the Fire a sure-fire success. But it does make it a credible pretender to the iPad’s throne.

さて，強調したdislodgeは攻撃的な表現です。意味はremoveと似ていますが，少しニュアンスが違います。『リーダーズ英和辞典』第2版で調べてみると「vt《固定位置から》無理に移動させる；《隠れ場所・拠点から》追い払う，追い出す(drive)」とあります。続いてLDOCE4によると“1. to force or knock something out of its position”, “2. to make someone leave a place or lose a position of power”とあります。Appleの独走状態を阻止しようとした企業の努力が垣間見られます。
次に，lose some sleep at nightについて。これは文を読んだだけでわかりますが，面白い表現ですので確認します。この表現に一番近いのは，おそらくlose sleep over (about)…で「…が気がかりで眠れない，…を心配する」でしょう(『リーダーズ英和辞典』研究社)。文を訳してみると「アップル本社の住人を安心して寝かせない企業がひとつあるとすれば，それはまちがいなくアマゾンだ。」となります。それほど，Amazonの自信のほどを伺えます。
最後にsure-fireですが，こちらは「間違いのない，確かな，成功請け負いの」という意味です(同上)。Amazon clouds driveとFireの連携システムは必ずしもthe Fireを成功に導くとは限らないが，iPadの王座を揺るがす存在になる，と締められています。このsure-fire，そして見出しのon fire（「火災を起こして」転じて「興奮して，熱中して，(俗語)とても魅力的で」(同上)）は，今回発表されたThe Fireに掛けて使われています。
