お気に入りのpodcastのひとつで，BBCから配信されている6 minutes Englishから英語表現を拾います。題材はswimmingです。

One in five adults in the UK cannot swim. What's more, millions of children in the UK can't swim a length of a pool. I think most people recognise that swimming is very important for safety and good for fitness. But maybe some people weren't introduced to the water early enough and they don't have the confidence to start swimming later in life.

強調箇所のintroduceに注目します。introduceは｢(人を)紹介する｣という意味を連想させます。しかし，ここで使われているのは，｢紹介する｣という訳ではすっきりしません。むしろ，｢経験させる｣という意味合いで使われているようです。辞書で確認してみますと｢４．[人]に〈･･･の〉手ほどきをする，〈･･･を〉初めて経験させる｣とあります(『オーレックス英和辞典』旺文社)。ちょうど，｢初めて経験させる｣という意味は，トピックの内容とぴったり合う表現です。(Othello)
