韓国のテグ（Daegu）で開催されている世界陸上。昨夜はウサイン・ボルト選手が男子200Mの決勝に登場しました。以下はJT. online（09/04/11付）の記事より抜粋。
Bolt was slowest out of the blocks coming off his disqualification for a false start in the 100 final last Sunday, but drove through the bend and powered to the line in 19.40 seconds, just 0.21 seconds of the world record he set to win his first world title two years ago. Knowing he had something to prove, there was no braggadocio during the race.

今回採り上げる言葉はbraggadocioです。辞書を見ると「大ぼら，大ほら吹き［〈brag＋伊語尾；Edmund Spenserの造語〉］」と記されています（『新英和中辞典』初版，旺文社）。さらにネットでも語源を調べてみると，
[C16: from Braggadocchio , name of a boastful character in Spenser's Faerie Queene ; probably from braggart + Italian -occhio (augmentative suffix)]（http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/braggadocio）
とありました。上記の英文よりbraggadocio は16世紀のイギリスの詩人Edmund SpenserのThe Faerie Queeneの登場人物の名前に由来している事が分かります。
男子100M決勝では，スタート前の自信に満ち溢れたパフォーマンスも虚しく，フライングで一発失格となったボルト選手。昨夜の200M決勝前は十八番の演出を封印し，結果として金メダルを獲得しました。視聴者としては少し物足りなさも感じましたが，来年開催されるオリンピックでは，パフォーマンス・記録共に期待したいと思います。（gacha）
