a string of / here-today, gone-tomorrow

野田総理について海外でどのように報じられているのか気になったので，各新聞を読んでみました。その多くは総理が入れ替わり立ち替わりすることについて集中しているようです。さて，今回はそんな日本の政治を切る表現をみてみます。最初はイングランドの高級紙The independentからです。
Japanese voters are hoping for stable leadership after a string of short-lived prime ministers since 2006. Mr Noda’s predecessor Naoto Kan was the first leader in five years to last more than 12 months. The bickering and infighting that characterised his last months in office recalled for many the worst moments of the discredited LDP.

見てわかりますように，a string of short-lived prime ministersと批判されています。このstringは「ひも，糸」から転じて「一連の，ひと続き，連続」という意味です(『リーダーズ英和辞典』研究社)。ここでは「2006年から続く一連の短命の総理大臣」と訳せます。 また前後してしまいますが，hopeが，わざわざ現在進行形で書かれていることに注目してみます。ここでは，｢日本人は今まさに安定したリーダーシップを望んでいる｣という具合に，まさに現在の日本人の心情を進行形の躍動感を伴って表しているように思えます。
続いてThe Economistを見てみましょう。こっちは少々厳しい視線で書かれています。
A fish called Noda
THERE is not a lot that instantly stands out about Yoshihiko Noda, who was chosen in an internal ruling-party election on August 29th to become Japan’s seventh prime minister in only five years. But at least two things can be said for him before he is dismissed as yet another here-today, gone-tomorrow face in some G8 summit's photo: he has a healthy sense of crisis, and a nicely self-deprecating sense of humour.

ここでは「５年間で７人目の総理」と日本の政治をばっさり切っています。さらに，赤で強調した箇所のhere-today, gone-tomorrowとは英語のことわざで「今日はここにあるが，明日はもうない」という意味です。ここでは，as yet｢まだ，今のところ｣という退任することを前提に置いている言葉と一緒に使われており，かなり皮肉的に聞こえます。「G8サミットの写真に写る，まだ退任する前の今日はいるが明日にはいない日本の顔である彼(野田総理)について，少なくとも二つ言うことができる。」と訳せます。
また，見出しのfishは野田総理自らがドジョウを引き合いに出したことを踏まえています。fishにはネガティヴな意味が伴う場合が度々見受けられますが，ここでネガティヴな意味合いで使われているかはわかりません。The best fish smell when they are three days old.にならぬよう，日本を引っ張ってもらいたいです。(Othello)
