A host of A-list stars unwisely said 'I do' to very disastrous looks at the Costume Institute Benefit Gala in New York last night. Naomi Campbell, Serena Williams and Black Eyed Peas star Fergie were among those who made the worst dressed list at the star-studded event, which was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The trio all opted for bizarre white confections that looked more like cheap bridal gowns than haute couture.
The View's Barbara Walters, 81, made few people green with envy in her unusual gown while Beyonce Knowles' sister Solange overdid it with her curly hair.

まずは，見出しにあるbridezillaについてです。辞書には「結婚を控えて神経過敏になっている女性」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。しかし，なぜbride + -zillaで，そのような意味になるのでしょうか。ウェブ・サイトWord Spyを覗いてみると，brideとGodzilla(ゴジラ)を合わせた造語でした。サイトによるbridezillaの意味は，“A bride-to-be who, while planning her wedding, becomes exceptionally selfish, greedy, and obnoxious.”とありました。この記事では，先日のイングランドにおけるroyal weddingを踏まえた表現として使われています。

次にgreen with envyですが，この由来は，ウィリアム・シェイクスピアの四大悲劇のひとつ，『オセロー』(Othello, the Moor of Venice,初演1604年？) の第３幕第３場のイアーゴーの台詞です。参考までに台詞を挙げます。
