After the years of drought and cutbacks, manufacturer's fixed costs and payroll are down to perhaps 60-75 per cent of what they were prior to the bust and that means two things. First the break-even figure on any project is a fraction of what it was before and second, there are going to be an awful lot of very tired people working in departments resembling a nuclear winter trying to keep up with their management's next, mad idea.
There might not be a tiger in your tank these days, but for folk working in the industry, the next few years are going to be like keeping hold of a charging tiger's tail.

今回はtigerに関係した表現を2つ採り上げます。まず1つ目は太字のThere might not be a tiger in your tankです。辞書を引いてみるとput a tiger in a person's tankで「〈人に〉活力を注入する」とありました（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。手持ちの辞書には，その由来に関しては明記されていませんでしたが，Put a tiger in your tank.という米国の石油会社Essoの広告スローガンと関係があるようです（同上）。よって，本文のThere might not be a tiger in your tank these daysは，yourを「（一般的な）人の」と考えて，「ここのところ全体的に活力（あるいは勢い）がないかもしれない」と解釈できます。

もう1つはkeep hold of a charging tiger's tailです。『リーダーズ英和辞典』（第2版，研究社）にはhave a tiger by the tailで「予期せぬ困難な[厄介な]状況に立つ，のっぴきならぬはめに陥る」とあります。虎は危険な動物ですので，そのしっぽを持っている状況というのは確かに「厄介な状況」です。形は異なりますが，本文のkeep hold of a charging tiger's tailも状況は似ています。chargeは自動詞で「（…に向かって）突撃［突進］する」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）なので，keep hold of a charging tiger's tailは「襲いかかってくる虎のしっぽを握り続けている」，つまり「非常に厄介な状況は今後も続く」と解釈できます。（院生 小山本）
