silhouetteの語源

Benzがthe Geneva Motor Showで新しいCクラスクーペを発表しました。それについて書かれたTelegraphの記事New C-class Coupé to star at Genevaから今回は語源を採り上げます。
The new coupé is aimed at 35-45 year-old professionals for whom "success, love of life and a strong sense of responsibility are all important", according to Mercedes. From the side, the new coupé has a low silhouette (41mm lower than the saloon) while at the front it shares the same styling as the latest C-class, but with chromed, louvred embellishments in the grille.

太字のsilhouetteはカタカナにもなっていますが，「（一般に）輪郭, 全体の形」という意味の単語です。ここでは車全体の形を指しています。そして，今回注目したのはその語源です。綴りからフランス語由来なのは明らかですが，辞書にはフランスの大蔵大臣Étienne de Silhouette（1709-67）の名前に由来するとありました（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。ではなぜ人の名前が上記のような意味を持つようになったのか。『研究社 新英和中辞典』（研究社）によれば，どうやらそれはSilhouetteが「影絵を描くことを趣味とした」ためのようです。silhouetteの語源が人の名前だということを今さながら知りました。（院生 小山本）
