今回採り上げるのは太字部分の‘when cats away the mice will play’ effectです。この引用府が付いている部分‘when cats away the mice will play’は諺で，辞書にはWhen ［While］ the cat's away, the mice will play.で「｟ことわざ｠ 猫がいないとネズミが遊びまわる」とありました（『プログレッシブ英和中事典』小学館）。日本語でいう「鬼のいぬ間に洗濯」にあたります。確認ですが，「鬼のいぬ間に洗濯」は「怖い人や気兼ねする人のいない間に，思う存分くつろぐこと」意味で，以前，「彼女のいない間に遊ぶ彼氏」のような文脈で（断っておきますが自分のことではありません），この表現をnative speakerの教授に教えていただいたことがあります。（院生 小山本）
