今回注目した表現はtepidです。tepidには「〈液体が〉なまぬるい」といった意味がありますが,その訳はこの場面では相応しくありません。辞書で調べてみると,「〈感情・反応などが〉熱意のない,微温的な」とありました(『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版,大修館書店)。用例に目をやると,a tepid reception「気のない接待」とありました。そのため,ここでは「消費者がお金を使う事にあまり乗り気でない時期に,売り手側は彼らの財布のひもを緩ませた」と解釈出来るのではないでしょうか。(ゼミ生 gacha)
