not mince words

DY(12/22/10付け)のThe Washington Postにあった，Her is no common storyから英語の表現を拾います。記事は最近Prince Williamと結婚したKate Middletonについて書かれています。
Royal watchers and the British media are not mincing words about the humble lineage of “commoner Kate.” “From pit to palace,” declared London’s Daily Mail, noting her great-great-grandfather’s days as a coal miner. “I’m not against the middle class as such, but I do query whether she has the background and breeding to be queen one day,” wrote James Whitaker, a guru of royal gossip. The Guardian, the Times of London, the Telegraph and the venerable BBC, among others, have all seen fit to dub her a “commoner.”
今回取り上げる表現はnot mince wordsです。辞書でその意味を調べてみるとnot mince words ［matters］で「遠慮なくはっきりと言う，歯に衣着せずに言う」という意味がありました（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。minceには通常「（肉など）を細かく刻む，ひき肉にする（▶chopよりも細かく刻むこと）」という意味がありますが，その他にも「（ことば）を控えめに言う，遠回しに言う」という意味があることがわかりました（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』同上）。
一部メディアはKate Middletonさんの家系（lineage）を揶揄するような発言をしているようです。メディアは嫁の2，3世代前の家柄や身分までも調べています。見出しにHer is not common storyとあることから，これはKateさんに限った話ではないようです。改めてイギリスは階級社会が根強いのだと感じました。（ゼミ生 camel）
