WITH THE GRAIN
Prime Minister Naoto Kan visits a rice field in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, on Sunday, on Sunday. Kan met with a group that purchases rice from 120 local farmers and sells it to restaurants and trading firms. He exchanged opinions with the group’s managers on ways to improve the country’s level of food self-sufficient.
ここでの注目表現はwith the grainです。文字通り「農作物とともに」という意味でもありますが，grainには「木目」や「性質」という意味があり（『オーレックス英和辞典』旺文社），with the grain「木目に沿って」，putt with the grain「《ゴルフ》順目でパットする」，work with the grain of nature「自然が持つ性質に逆らわない」などの例文があります（英辞郎 on the WEB）。
菅首相は，最近の支持率低下に伴い，一つでも何か成功させたいという姿勢から農業改革に取り組む意欲をアピールしたい考えだ（excite.ニュース）。ここから上記のwith the grainには「農作物のそばでなすがままに」のようなメッセージが感じ取れます。
