今回はJODI PICOULTのPicture Perfectのp.207から英語の落穂拾いをします。
With the exception of Alex’s engagement ring, I wasn’t wearing any jewelry. But throat was ringed with the proof of Alex’s nightmare, a necklace of amethyst bruises. I had borrowed pancake from the makeup trailer and applied it before Mistress Szabo arrived, but that didn’t keep me from knowing what was underneath.
注目したいのは，pancakeです。この単語を聞いて，まず思い浮かべるのは「パンケーキ」ではないでしょうか。しかし文脈から判断すると，ここでは違うようです。
辞書を見ると，pancake　make upで「パンケーキ＜ケーキ状・棒状のおしろい（商標でPan-Cakeともいう）」（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）とありました。Pancake はpancakeでも化粧品のpancakeなのですね。
