Six Things to Know Before Your TSA Pat-Down
1. Are you dressed for a pat down?
Some passengers have reported that their baggy or bulky clothing has made them targets for pat downs. Meanwhile, entrepreneur in Colorado is trying to cash in on the fear of exposure by selling “scan proof” undergarments filled with tungsten, which he says will block the radiation and blur the image. No word from the TSA on whether donning these duds will lead to a manual search -- though the creator of the undergarments says he’s sold over a thousand items, the LA Times notes that the screeners have yet to see anyone use them.

今回注目したのはpat downです。「〈物を〉軽くたたく；軽くたたいて（…に）する」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）という意味のpatとdownから意味は想像できるかもしれませんが，pat downで「身体検査」あるいは「身体検査をする」という意味があります。
この他に「身体検査」にあたるものとしてfrisk「（盗品などを捜すための）身体検査, ボディーチェック」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）やbody search, security search『スーパーアンカー和英辞典』（第2版，学習研究社）があります。
では，日本語でよくいう「ボディーチェック」は使えないのでしょうか。これについて『スーパーアンカー和英辞典』（同上）に以下のような解説がありました。
「1. 空港などので行う「ボディーチェック」は，security checkというが，この語は単に身体検査だけでなく荷物などを調べることも含む。「身体検査」の意味ではbody searchとかfriskという。2. body checkはアイスホッケーの用語で，相手の動きを体当たりで阻止することをいう。」（『スーパーアンカー和英辞典』第2版，学習研究社）
上記の違いを押さえた上で，security check, body search, friskにpat downというPhrasal Verbも加えておきましょう。（院生 小山本）
