今回の表現は damning with faint praiseです。意味を確認してみるとdamn O with faint praiseで「…をいい加減にほめて実はけなす」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。前文に登場するRyan Theriot選手，Chone Figgins選手ともにメジャー・リーグで活躍している選手です。共通点は“足を生かした”プレースタイル。西岡選手も俊足巧打を売りにしているため，ここで比較対象とされたのでしょう。ただ，ド派手なプレースタイルが観衆の注目を引くアメリカでは，内野安打やバントヒットなどで活躍する選手の評価は賛否両論です（イチローもその一人）。日本での実績などを採り上げて，ほめているように見せていますが，こころの中は…。期待が薄い分、向こうで成績を残し，周りを認めさせる必要があるようです。（ゼミ生 gacha）
