It is still early in the season (although the Bundesliga takes a winter break beginning in mid-December), but Kagawa went miles to cement his place in Dortmund lore in September. He scored two goals in Dortmund’s derby win, 3-1, over struggling Schalke 04, its first win over its big-spending rival in three years. To add to Dortmund’s satisfaction, the win on Sept. 19 came on the 101st anniversary of the club’s founding

まずgo milesですが，これはgo the extra mileという表現がもとになっていると考えらえます。このgo the extra mileは聖書のマタイ伝（the Gospel according to St. Matthew）に由来するもので，「（一層）努力する，もっとがんばる，もうひと押しする，特に力を入れる」（『リーダーズ英和辞典』第2版，研究社）という意味。聖書を意識しているのは，in Dortmund lore（loreは「言い伝え」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）という意味）という部分からも説明がつきます。
また，cement his placeという表現も面白いと思いました。cementは「接合剤；セメント；コンクリート」のことですが，比喩的に「〈友情関係などを〉固める, 堅くする, 強固にする｟together｠」という意味があり，ここでの訳は「ポジション（地位）を確立する」あたりでしょうか。（院生 小山本）
