Review: Apple's latest MacBook Air does more heavy lifting
Apple's ditching hard drives for flash storage. Flash is nearly twice as fast as the hard drives typically used in notebooks, Apple says, and better able to withstand the rigors of the road. I inadvertently dropped the 13-inch Air I tested; no damage.

「溝」という意味のditchには動詞で「…を見捨てる」「〈恋人を〉振る」という意味があります（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。LDOCEにも第1義でto stop having something because you no longer want itが，第2儀でto end a romantic relationship with someoneが載っていました。
今後パソコンの主流はhard drivesからflash shortage（あるいはflush memory）へと移行していくだろうとApple社のJobs氏が宣言しているように，これまで当たり前のように付き合ってきたHDに別れを告げ，次の「次元」に足を踏み入れようとしている，今回のditchからはそんなニュアンスが感じられます。（院生 小山本）
