pent up

CHENGDU, China--Recent anti-Japan protests in China were apparently triggered by the pent-up anger of university students and other young people frustrated over such social problems as their difficulty finding work.

注目したのはpent-upです。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版, 大修館書店）によると，pent(pen)には「(人)に閉塞感を感じさせる」という意味があり，pent-upで「閉じ込められた， うっ積した」という意味があることが分かりました。ここでは，若者たちの就活難や社会問題への「積もり積もった怒り」を表しているのですね。
