a nail in one’s coffin

今回はDorothy KoomsonのThe Ice Cream Girlsのp.１３７から英語の落ち穂拾いをしていきます。

今回注目したいのは，it was the final nail in the coffinという部分です。まずcoffinと聞くと，すぐに棺を思い浮かべると思います。次にnailです。この単語を耳にすると「爪」が頭に浮かぶのではないでしょうか。このことから「棺の最後の爪だった」と考えられます。しかし，これではしっくり来ないので辞書をみてみると，a [another] nail in O's [the] coffin「《略式》…を破滅に導くもの，…の命取り」（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第四版，大修館書店）とありました。
