Govt 'will not cave in to China' / Domestic law, not foreign pressure, to decide detained captain's case
The government will not concede to the Chinese government's demand to immediately free the captain of a Chinese fishing boat that collided with Japan Coast Guard vessels off the Senkaku Islands earlier this month, according to sources.
"We'll respond to the matter calmly and seriously based on domestic laws. We won't compromise," a senior official of the Foreign Ministry said.
According to sources, the government will ask China to approach the issue calmly.
The Chinese government has warned it will take "severe retaliatory measures" if Japan does not release the captain immediately and unconditionally.
The warning came after the Ishigaki Summary Court in Okinawa Prefecture on Sunday authorized extending the detention of the captain, Zhan Qixiong, by 10 days for further questioning.
