A crowded swimming pool at the Toshimaen amusement park in Tokyo's Nerima Ward is seen from a Mainichi helicopter on Aug. 22, 2010. Some 16,700 people visited the pool on the day to cool off, as the high temperature reached 36.1 degrees Celsius in the ward shortly after noon. Thanks to this summer's scorching heat, the number of visitors to the pool has risen by around 10 percent from last year, according to Toshimaen officials. (Mainichi)
beatには「…を和らげる, 避ける；…の埋め合わせをする」という意味があり，heat the beatで「（体の）熱を冷ます」という意味のイディオムです（『プログレッブ英和中辞典』小学館）。また，『リーダーズ英和辞典』（第2版，研究社）では「暑さをしのぐ」と訳されていました。
加えて，お気づきの通り，/i:/の音（おん）で韻を踏んでいて，さらには単語も難しくないので中学生向け発音練習として，夏の暑い時期には丁度いいかもしれません。
ちなみに水泳で使う「ビート板」ですが，あれは「〔水泳で〕｟米国用法｠ a kickboard; a flutterboard; ｟英国用法｠ a float」といいます（『プログレッブ英和中辞典』同上）。（院生 小山本）
