日航ジャンボ機墜落事故から25年が経ちました。その慰霊式に関する記事から。
In 1987, Kimi headed with her then 16-month-old son to the Osutaka mountain ridge. Carrying 11-kilogram Hideaki on her back, a sweat-drenched Kimi finally made it to the gravestone. "It's the first time the whole family has been together, so I shouldn't cry, should I?" Kimi said at the time, as she dabbed at tears.

今回採り上げるのはdabというなじみがありそうで，なかなか使えない言葉です。dabには「…を（手柔らかい物で）軽くたたく, とんとん打つ｟with ...｠」という意味があります（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。
さらに記事のようにatが続くと「（…に）軽く触れる」という意味があり，dab at one’s eyes with a handkerchief（目にハンカチを当てる）のように使います。（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。よって記事のdab at tearsで「涙をぬぐう」，「涙にハンカチを当てる」と解釈できます。
さらに，偶然にも，円高に関するCNNの記事からdabに関係した表現を見つけました。
When I moved here almost three years ago, the Japanese yen was hovering around 120, 110 versus the U.S. dollar. Now mid-August 2010, the yen is smack dab in the 80’s. 『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』（同上）によれば，smackには副詞で「ピシャリと，いきなり，まともに」という意味があり「smack dabとすることもある」とありました。『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』（同上）にもアメリカ英語でsmack-dabは「まともに, ちょうど」という意味があるとありました。（院生 小山本）
