Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader is a terrific device, but a lot of people, myself included, figured that once Apple’s iPad came out, the Kindle would be toast.
この記事の最後にあるtoastに注目です。この語を聞くと，パンのトーストを思い浮かべる人もいると思いますが，toastには「〈俗〉破滅，大変なトラブル，故障品」（「英辞郎on the WEB」）という意味があります。そこからbe toastで「（人・ものが）おしまいである，一巻の終わりである」という意味で，If you don’t finish this report by tomorrow, you’re toast.（あすまでに報告書をあげないとまずいことになるよ）のように使われます。（院生 小山本）
