Ex-lower house member Hamada arrested for breach of trust
CHIBA (Kyodo) -- Koichi Hamada, a former House of Representatives member of the opposition Liberal Democratic Party, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of breach of trust for allegedly causing 200 million yen worth of financial damage to a business corporation, police said.
Hamada, 81, allegedly sold in 2006 stockholdings which he had put up as collateral to borrow that amount of money from the business firm headquartered in the city of Chiba, the police said.
Hamada has refused to respond to questioning by police investigators, saying he has no intention to reply, the police said.
Born in 1928 in Futtsu, Chiba Prefecture, Hamada won a seat in the 1969 general election for the lower house for the first time after serving as a member of the Futtsu municipal and Chiba prefectural assemblies. He was returned to the lower house six times.
Nicknamed "Hamako," he served as a lower house member from 1969 through 1983. Hamada once chaired the House of Representatives Budget Committee and headed the LDP's public relations committee.
After retiring from politics in 1993, Hamada appeared on various programs as a TV personality.
Incumbent LDP lower house member Seiichi Hamada is his son. The younger Hamada served as defense minister in the Cabinet of then Prime Minister Taro Aso from September 2008 through September 2009.
The Penal Code sets penalties of imprisonment of up to five years or a fine of up to 500,000 yen for those acting in breach of legal duty and causing financial loss to another.
