titillation

JT（07/07/10付け）から英単語を一つ紹介したいと思います。
日本でもテレビで度々見る「お見合い番組（a matchmaking show）」が今，中国で大きな問題になっています。中国政府が倫理上問題あるとしてその番組を検閲（censor）し始めたのです。その理由は男女の性的にきわどい（racy）会話が社会全体のモラルを乱していると政府が判断したためです。しかし，若者の間で絶大な人気を誇る番組であるため反対勢力も根強いようです。同紙はその様子を以下のように伝えています。
Audiences loved all the titillation, until last month- when Chinese government censors came down hard.
注目したい語はtitillationです。辞書で意味を確認してみると「くすぐること；くすぐったさ；性的刺激」と出ていました。動詞形はtitillate で意味は「（想像・興味などを）くすぐる；〈写真・話しなどが〉（人を）性的に刺激する；〈ゴシップ・スキャンダルなどが〉（…の）心を浮き立たせる」です（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。
Norman Lewis著のWord Power Made Easy（POCKET BOOKS）に語源と共にわかりやすい説明がありました。
“Titillate comes from a Latin verb meaning tickle, and may be used both literally and figuratively. That is （literally）, you can titillate someone by stroking him gently in strategic places; you are then causing an actual （and always very pleasant） physical sensation; or you can （figuratively） titillate him, or his mind, or his fancy, or his palate （and this is the more common use of the word）, by your charm, brilliance, cuteness, attractive appearance, or by any other device your imagination can conceive.”
娯楽としてのテレビは常に視聴者の興味・関心を引きつけるものでなくてはなりません。ただ，中国ではその興味のそそる（titillate）方法が問われています。（ゼミ生 camel）
