Soccer: Japan keeper Kawashima signs with Lierse
LIER, Belgium (Kyodo) -- Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima, who was one of the biggest hits in the country's positive World Cup campaign, signed with Lierse SK on Wednesday.
"I have received a great opportunity. I want to perform well to show my appreciation to all the people who have supported me and contribute to my team," said Kawashima.
With a string of fine performances, Kawashima emerged from the shadow of Seigo Narazaki, who was seen as the first-choice goalkeeper before the World Cup, and played all four matches in South Africa.
In the press conference that lasted about 30 minutes, Kawashima gave greetings in Dutch and exchange words in English.
His contract is for two years with a club option for a third. Lierse, whose home field is located in Lier in northern Belgium, were promoted back to the 16-team top division this season.
Jubilo Iwata's Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi is the only Japan goalkeeper to have played in Europe, for England's Portsmouth in 2001-2002 and Denmark's FC Nordsjaelland in 2003-2004.
Kawashima has spent the past three-plus seasons with Kawasaki Frontale. Lierse will have their first match on July 31.
