Japan comes close, but falls short against Dutch
Shintaro Kano / Daily Yomiuri Sportswriter

DURBAN--Japan came within a hair of taking a point off the Netherlands but came out on the losing end as Takeshi Okada's side went down 1-0 on Saturday.
Wesley Sneijder scored the only goal of the game early in the second half. Japan's second round chances now rest on the June 24 game against Denmark at Rustenburg. Denmark was set to play Cameroon later Saturday.
"It's tough," Okada said. "We wanted to score at least once against them at all costs, but it didn't happen and it's disappointing. We'll do everything we can to win the Denmark game now."
Okada succeeded in frustrating the Dutch all right, placing everyone but Keisuke Honda, the match-winner in Monday's 1-0 win over Cameroon, behind the ball.
The Netherlands absolutely dominated the ball in the first half, owning 69 percent of possession, but with so many white shirts in front of goal they struggled to get their shots off.
The Dutch had enough of lethargy after 45 minutes, starting the second half strong and finally broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute.
Marcus Tulio Tanaka's half-clearance rolled out to Robin van Persie, who laid the ball off for Sneijder on the box. Sneijder whacked it on his first touch, putting his team in front off the hands of Eiji Kawashima.
Japan finally came out of its own half after going down, as Okada threw on attacking options Shunsuke Nakamura, Shinji Okazaki and Keiji Tamada and even pushed defender Tulio up into the forward line.
Okazaki fired a great chance over the bar in the 90th minute, and Yuto Nagatomo nearly won a penalty during injury time but Japan would never reach the scoreboard before the final whistle.
