'Irritated' schoolboy stabs female classmate at school
YAMAGUCHI -- A schoolboy who stabbed a 15-year-old female student at school, saying he was feeling "irritated," has been arrested, law enforcers said.
Police said they received a mobile phone call from a 15-year-old boy at Tabuse Agricultural Technical High School in Yamaguchi Prefecture at about 8:05 a.m. on June 17, saying he had stabbed someone with a knife he brought from home.
When police arrived at the school, they found the student and a 15-year-old girl who had been stabbed in the right shoulder and right stomach. The girl was taken to a hospital, where she was treated for light injuries.
The boy reportedly told police, "I stabbed her inside the classroom," and police immediately arrested him on suspicion of inflicting injuries on her and violating the Firearms and Swords Control Law.
When questioned over his actions, the boy reportedly said: "I did it because I was irritated. I didn't intend to kill her."
School officials said the boy and girl were first-year students in the same class. An investigation official quoted the boy as saying that he stabbed the girl from behind while she was near a window on the fourth floor. The girl said he had approached her silently.
"I was sitting in the classroom when he suddenly approached me silently from behind. I felt a sting and when I turned around he was there holding a knife," the girl reportedly said. The male student had put the knife in a bag, and police seized it.
At the time of the attack, classes had not yet started, and the boy and girl were reportedly the only ones in the classroom.
The school's principal expressed regret over the attack at a news conference, saying "It is extremely unfortunate that this happened under the school's jurisdiction. We want to put all of our efforts into preventing a recurrence."
The principal said the arrested student was usually quiet and was rarely absent. Both students were involved in club activities, though the clubs they belonged to were different.(Mainichi Japan) June 17, 2010
