言葉のつかみ方
普通の学習英和辞書だけでは意味の違いを瞬時につかめず，英英辞書をめくらねばならない言葉に出会うことがある。そのひとつが；midwife/ doula だった。これは，20年以上前，医療関係の通訳のバイトをしていたときに気づいたことだが，その後は記憶の奥底に沈んだままになっていた。
が，昨夜，「言葉の森歩き」をしていたときに，NZ Herald電子版にあった以下の記事（Keeping Mum Multi-tasking doulas by Dita De Boni）が目にとまり，昔の「発見」がflash backした。
評論はこうはじまる；
It's acknowledged that women generally need support from someone during birth. Fathers have largely been roped into this task, even if perhaps they are not always the most suitable birthing assistants.
Never fear if your man isn't quite up to the task anyhow, because with "medical" births becoming more common, you can hire a private obstetrician, a private anaesthetist (for your epidural) and even a private midwife to coach you through the pain, should your chequebook stretch that far.
NZ（Hamilton?）を思い起こさせる言い回し（be roped into）や多少の医学用語（epidural）もあるが，読解は容易だろう。くだんの言葉は次の段落である。
You can also hire a doula, an experienced woman who hasn't got medical training but is there as your personal support person - encouraging you, making you as comfortable as possible and cheering you on. I haven't used one but women who have can say nothing but unending positive things about them.
と，doulaの定義がされている。学習者用の辞書では；
midwife 「助産師（婦）」，「産婆」/doula（米）「助産師（婦）」，「産婆」
とあるが，これではまったく用をなさない。評論の定義にあるように，違いは「医療トレーニング」を受けたか，受けていないかなのである。こうした点，英英はきちんとその「言葉のつかみ方」を伝授してくれる。
midwife “a person, especially a woman, who is trained to help women give birth to babies”
doula (AmE) “a woman whose role is to provide emotional support to a woman who is giving birth”
ということで，通訳のときには「自然分娩補助人（士）」だったか，医学用語辞典にそった訳をしたが，その後，20年経って，自然分娩や自宅分娩の動きとともに，「デューラ」という言葉がそのまま人口に膾炙するようになったということは今，インターネットで調べてわかった。
いずれにしても，何でもないことだが，言葉をつかむためには，気になったら（めんどうくさいかもしれないが）英英の定義にあたる，ということが非英語母語話者には最低限のお勉強なのだということがわかる。もちろん，必ずしもではなく適宜ではあるが...。なお，この事例にあるように辞書に「（米）」などと使用範囲が明示されていても，情報が地球をあらゆる形でめぐる時代である，それはあくまでひとつの参考であることにも留意したい。
