Words Pregnant with Consequences

　少し古いもので恐縮ですが，10年前に雅子さまのご懐妊騒ぎの折にまとめた記事を再録します（by UG,『英語青年』3月号，2000年に掲載）。

　今回のご懐妊騒ぎの最中，CNN (Reuters電)が伝えた次の一文を読者諸賢はどうお感じになるだろうか。
TOKYO (Reuters) -- Japan's Princess Masako, whose failure to produce an heir in six years of marriage to Crown Prince Naruhito has been a focus of constant attention, may finally be pregnant, Japanese media said on Friday (http://cnn.com/1999/ASIANOW/east/12/09).
　whose failure以下は女性のみならず男性でも違和感を覚えるpolitically incorrectな表現である。あまりにも直截な言い回しである。'コウノトリのご機嫌がよくない'のは雅子妃のせいだと明言しているのに等しい。produceもひっかかる。もっともJapanese media saidと書くあたり，それも計算づくなのかもしれない。しかしながら，例えば；
Japan's Princess Masako,whose misfortune of not yet having been blessed by the stork in bringing an heir in six years of marriage to Crown Prince Naruhito...
とでもすれば，冗長ではあるが，違和感はなかっただろう。ちなみにBBCのJuliet Hindell東京特派員（当時）の英文は王室とのつきあいの長さゆえか，その点，如才ない。
The Japanese imperial family has a shortage of male heirs - and the couple's childlessness during six years of marriage has been a major preoccupation of Japanese gossip magazines (http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/12/10).
　以上，言の葉が孕む社会・文化的な意味の重さを考えさせられる事例であった。まさにwords pregnant with consequencesである。
