今回取り上げるのは，eugenic /juːdʒénɪk/ です。文脈から「優生」という意味だと予測しました。以下で確認していきます。

まず，LDOCEで意味を調べてみると，eugenicsで“the study of methods to improve the metal and physical abilities of the human race by choosing who should become parents - used to show disapproval” とあり，『ウィズダム英和辞典』には，「優生学」と載っていました。UG先生の「英語名」（？）がEugeneであることを思い出しました。

現在取っている授業の中でちょうど優生学を学んでいたのですが，英語で何というのかすぐに思い出すことができませんでした。自分の身近にあるものから，英語では何と言うのか常に考え，retentionを常に心がけていきたいです。（Otoyo）

windmill 復習

授業で覚えた単語を紹介します。

それがwindmill /wín(d)mìl/ です。最初の思いつく意味は「風車」ですが、これとは別の表現を持っています。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）で調べるとtilt at windmillsというかたちで「（自分が勝手に思い込んだ）空想上の敵と戦う[議論する], ひとり相撲する」とありました。Merriam-Websterには “an imaginary wrong, evil, or opponent” と定義されています。

では、なぜこのような意味になったのでしょうか。
同辞書の説明には “from the episode in Don Quixote by Cervantes in which the hero attacks windmills under the illusion that they are giant” とあります。つまりドン・キホーテが風車を敵と思い戦ったことから上記の意味へと発展していきました。(amphibian)

　トルコの首都アンカラで、高速列車が整備用の機関車と衝突する事故がありました。

9 killed in train collision in Turkey

Nine people were killed and nearly 50 injured in Turkey when a high-speed train collided with a locomotive and crashed into a station platform and overpass in an Ankara suburb early Thursday, officials said.

Rescuers worked to free people trapped under the mangled wreckage at Marsandiz train station, eight kilometers from central Ankara. It was not clear at what speed the train and locomotive were traveling when the collision occurred. There was light snow on the tracks.

　mangle /mˈæŋgl/ を取り上げます。文脈から、the mangled wreckageは山積した瓦礫のことを表しているのではないかと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「（普通は受身で）（…）をめった切りにする、押しつぶす；台無しにする」とありました。

　LDOCEには “to damage or injure something badly by crushing or twisting it” や “to spoil something such as a speech or piece of music, by saying or playing it badly” と定義されています。ぶつかったりねじったりすることで、ひどく傷つける様子を表します。

　記事の内容に戻ると、衝突の勢いが激しかったことから、駅の一部が大破した様子がmangleで表現されていると考えられます。事故現場の写真をニュースで見ましたが、駅の高架が崩れ落ちていて、事故の大きさが感じられました。（aqua）
