TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike stepped down as leader of the opposition Kibo no To (Party of Hope) on Tuesday.

At a meeting of party lawmakers in both chambers of the Diet, Koike said she is resigning as leader to offer different forms of support to the party.

Coleader Yuichiro Tamaki, a member of the House of Representatives, replaced Koike.

At a time when her clout is diminishing following the party’s defeat in the lower house election on Oct. 22, Koike aims to focus on running the metropolitan government, as Tamaki is forming a new executive team for the party, informed sources said.

Koike said she will leave national politics up to people responsible for them.

　愛媛県松山市で、41歳の男が車で暴走し、6つの事故を引き起こしました。

Ehime prefectural police announced that it arrested Ryohei Zaima, a company employee in Imabari, on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Law.

Police said Zaima admitted to the offenses and reportedly told them, “Various stresses led me to try to self-destruct and to drive recklessly.”

　気になった語は"self-destruct"です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館）を参照すると、「（機械・爆弾などが）事故破壊する、自滅する」と載っていました。ハイフンで繋がれた語が動詞として使われるのは珍しいのではないかと思います。現に"self-"が付く語は辞書に見開き1ページ分載っていますが、動詞として使われているのはその1語だけでした。「...を自爆させる」を意味する"destruct"の原義は、「下に(de) 建てる(struct)」です。(Large Lake)

　今回はshackに注目しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）で調べたところ、「掘っ立て小屋」、「部屋」、「貨車の制動手；乗務員室」、「同棲相手」と載っておりました。語源はshackly (揺れる，がたつく)からの逆成とのことです。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th)には、 “a roughly built hut or cabin”と書かれております。

　話がそれますが、最近日本でも話題のSHAKE SHKACKというハンバーガー屋さんをご存知でしょうか。shackで思い出したので調べてみたところ、 “The reason its called Shake Shack is because the original building was just this actual shack-like-building in the middle of Madison Square Park.”という由来を見つけました。ちなみにshakeは、milkshakesからきているようです。shackの語源と併せて考えると、言葉遊びが隠されているように思います。

　non-starter / nɒnˈstɑːtəʳ / を取り上げます。一見, 簡単な表記ですが, 『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で改めて確認したところ, 第一に「スタートしない人」とありました。ここから, 「見込みのない人・もの」「うまくいかないこと」を表します。また競馬においては「出走しない馬」を指します。続いてMerriam-Webster.comには “someone or something that is not productive or effective” と定義されていました。ちなみに反意語となる “starter” は, 上記のほか「最初に出る料理」や乳製品などの発酵に用いる「スターター」を示す多義語のようです(同英和辞典)。(Cayu)

　LDOCEには “weed somebody/something out” の形で “to get rid of people or things that are not very good” と定義されています。

　記事の内容では、小池氏が民進党出身の議員を希望の党から排除したことについて非難されていることが述べられています。また、辞任について責任逃れだという見方もされていることから、今後の風当たりは厳しいものになると思われます。（aqua）
