１０日に、英国のロックミュージシャンで俳優のデビッド・ボウイ氏が亡くなったことが分かりました。１年半の闘病生活を続け、家族に見守られて旅立ったそうです。
David Bowie has died after a battle with cancer, his rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 69.
"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief," read a statement posted on the artist's official social media accounts.

取り上げる表現は、“wispiness”です。これは、“wispy”「（髪などが）ほんの少し、かすかな」（G４）の名詞になります。手持ちの辞書には載っていなかったので、調べてみると、「Weblio英和辞典」ですが、「弱々しさ」と載っていました。この表現に関連する語彙に、“wisp”「（わら・ほし草などの）小さな束」（G４）があります。ここでは、“the stubborn wispiness of its sound”と使われており、「アルバムの曲にかすかな音が続く特徴がある」といった解釈になるのではないでしょうか。
恥ずかしながら、デビッド氏についてあまり知らなかったので、これを機に曲を聞いてみたいです。(Nao)

先月18日に世界一斉公開された映画「スターウォーズ/フォースの覚醒」が9日、中国でもついに公開されました。中国での初日興行収入は歴代3位の記録となったようです。
Disney, which bought Lucasfilm from “Star Wars” creator George Lucas for $4 billion in 2012, is planning two more films in the series as well as a stand-alone spinoff.
Hong Kong martial arts star Donnie Yen and Chinese Jiang Wen were cast in the spinoff “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, the next to come out from the franchise, in an attempt to appeal to mainland audiences.

取り上げる表現は“stand-alone”です。
“stand alone”と動詞になっている場合は「<人・物が><能力・誠実さなど>の点で比較するものがない」という意味になりますが、形容詞の“stand-alone”では「<会社・組織などが>（金銭的に）独立した」という意味があると『ジーニアス英和辞典第4版』には書かれていました。さらに、「英辞郎on the WEB」でも調べてみたところ、「（一般に）単独で動作する、独立型の」という意味があり、記事ではこれがあてはまります。Macmillan Dictionaryでは“not connected to anything else, or not depending on anything else”と定義されていました。
今回公開されたのは新たな3部作のうちの1作目で、この3部作に加えて今年12月にはスターウォーズシリーズ初となるスピンオフ映画が公開される予定です。本編とストーリーは異なるようなので、そういった意味で「独立型の」と書かれているのだと思います。(bookmark)

今年もズボンをはかずに地下鉄に乗車するイベント “No Pants Subway Ride”が開催されました。
Hundreds of cheeky travellers across the globe rode trains, tubes and subways today with no trousers on as a part of the 'No Pants Subway Ride' day.
The event began in 2002 in New York City with seven members of the improvisational group, Improv Everywhere, known for their flash mobs, boarding the subway without trousers. By 2006, 150 people had joined the fun, feeling the draft as they rode the train without trousers.
Ten years on, the fad has spread to countries like Germany, Czech Republic and The UK, proving the trouserless train ride is still alive and well.
'No Pants Subway Ride' is always planned in winter, and last year 4,000 people participated in NYC alone.
'The idea behind No Pants is simple: Random passengers board a subway car at separate stops in the middle of winter without pants. The participants behave as if they do not know each other, and they all wear winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. The only unusual thing is their lack of pants,' Improv Everywhere's website reads.
今回取り上げるのは、“the draft”（cf. Br. 綴り draught ）です。
“draft”をLDOCEで調べてみると、“cold air that moves through a room and that you can feel”と定義されていました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）で確認してみると、「すきま風」などの意味が見つかりました。ズボンを脱いで地下鉄の乗ると，すきま風が直接あたり，さぞかし寒いものと思います。
ただし，“feel the draft”で，「歓迎されていないように感じる、冷たくあしらわれているように感じる」（"to sense that one is being rejected; to sense that someone is cool toward one, possibly for racial reasons"--McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs）という意味もあるのですが，ここではどうでしょうか。(ninetails)
“dogspreading”
先生から教えて頂いた記事を取り上げます。ニューヨークの地下鉄には、ダンスなどをしてお金を稼ぐ人や最近では、ズボンを穿かないで乗る人などヘンな人がたくさんいるそうです。近年、犬をケースに入れず、一緒に乗る人も増えつつあるとのこと。
The city beneath the city, also known as the New York subway system, is a part-time home to a seemingly endless array of eccentrics, from “showtime” dancers to mariachi bands.
Last year, one woman was called “the Most Inconsiderate Human in the NYC Subway System” for hogging three seats for herself and her unpackaged pooch. (Shall we call this “dogspreading”?)
取り上げる表現は、“dogspreading”です。これはその前にあるhogging three seats for herself and her unpackaged poochを言い換えて，一昨年のはやりことば "man spreading"にかけた表現です。さしずめ「犬の座席占拠」でしょうか。(Nao)
emaciated 復習
シリア内で危機に瀕している住民に対して，救助隊が食料を届けに出かけました。
記事の中で気になった単語は"emaciated"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると「…をやつれさせる, やせ衰えさせる」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"emaciated"で"Abnormally thin or weak, especially because of illness or a lack of food"と定義されております。Oxford Dictionaries.comで語源を調べると"made thin"の意味をもつラテン語の"emaciat"から生じたようです。（Ume）
Madaya Syria: Aid convoy reaches besieged town
This humanitarian mission was forged by a cruel conflict. Aid for rebel-held Madaya was contingent on help for government-controlled Foah and Kefraya.
Images of Madaya's emaciated children sparked alarm in many capitals and created greater impetus but they also provoked a war of words.
Supporters of the Syrian government and its Lebanese Hezbollah allies accused rebel forces in Madaya of seizing food for themselves. Some even mocked reports of starvation. The opposition charged President Assad's forces with more war crimes.
Today, Madaya is the face of Syria's suffering. Two years ago, it was Yarmouk.
These are moments that mobilise the world's sympathy but over the past year, only 10% of the UN's requests to deliver aid to people to in besieged and hard-to-reach areas were granted. That is where 4.5 million Syrians live.
