今回はmusic to one’s earsを紹介します。「〜にとっては音楽のように聞こえる」と訳せますが、どのような意味なのでしょうか。

ジーニアス英和辞典』でmusic /mjúːzɪk/ を引いてみると、第3義に「好ましい情報」とあり、music to one’s earで「良い知らせを聞く」とありました。Cambridge Dictionaryには “something you are pleased to hear about” と定義されています。例文は “When she said they would make a profit, it was music to Richard’s ears” と使われています。

他にもmusicを使った表現にface the musicがあります。これは「自分の不始末にけじめをつける」という意味になります。(amphibian)
