acrid /ˈækrɪd/ を取り上げます。意味は、文脈から「立ち上る」ではないかと推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(味が)ぴりっとする、苦い、(においが)鼻をつく、(煙が)つんとくる、(気質・言葉などが)きつい、とげとげしい、辛辣な」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “an acrid smell of taste is strong and unpleasant and stings your nose or throat” “an acrid remark expresses anger and criticizes someone strongly” と定義されています。「英・語・源」を見てみると、ラテン語のacidus(=sour), acetum(=vinegar)が由来であることが分かりました。
この日を迎え、何を学ぶことが出来るでしょうか。私は、その答えの１つに「地域のつながり」の重要性を挙げます。災害時に、避難が困難な人を支えてあげられるのは周りの人です。そんな周りが集まれば、より多くの命が助けられる。そう考えます。(seventh-dan)
