Record low births, high population decline in cards

The number of births in Japan this year will be the lowest since official records began in 1899, and the bad news doesn't stop there.

The population decline will be close to half a million, according to estimates released Dec. 21 by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

The number of births this year is expected to drop by about 25,000 to hit an all-time low of about 921,000.

　graying /ɡréɪɪŋ/ を取り上げます。髪の毛が白髪まじりになっている様子を表す際にはgrayが用いられることから、なんとなく意味が想像できます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版　大修館書店）で調べると「高齢化（する）」とありました。

　Merriam-Websterで動詞の項目を見ると “to contain an increasing percentage of older people” と定義されています。例には “The town's population has grayed over the last two decades.” とあり、動詞として「高齢化する」という意味で使われることがわかりました。

　他にも色を表す言葉の動詞の形が気になったので、上記の英和辞典で探してみると、whiteは「（字）を白い修正液で消す、…に余白をつくる、語間をあける」、yellowは「（…を）黄色にする（黄色になる）、黄ばませる（黄ばむ）」、pinkは「ピンク色になる、顔を赤らめる」などが見つかりました。この他にも様々な色があるので、調べようと思います。（aqua）
