今回取り上げるのは，rodent /róʊdnt/ です。文脈からカピバラを指していることは分かったのですが，日本語にうまく訳せなかったため調べてみました。
まず，LDOCEで意味を調べてみると，“any small animal of the type that has long sharp front teeth, such as a rat or a rabbit” とあり，『ウィズダム英和辞典』には，「げっ歯類の動物（ネズミ・リス・ビーバーなど）」と載っていました。
続いて，『オックスフォード新英英辞典』で語源を引いてみると，“mid 19th cent. : from Latin rodent- ‘gnawing’, from the verb rodere” と定義されていました。（Otoyo）
