　engineer /èndʒəníɚ/ を取り上げます。名詞の意味の「技師、技術者」という意味で知られる単語ですが、ここでは動詞として用いられています。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「1（しばしば軽蔑的）（陰謀など）をたくらむ、（…）の（裏面）工作をする　2（普通は受身で）（…）を設計する　3（…）の遺伝子の構造を変える」とありました。

　LDOCEには “to make something happen by skilful secret planning” や “to change the genetic structure of a plant, animal etc” などと定義されています。裏で画策して動く様子が伝わってきます。
