stampede 復習

札幌で発生したガス爆発事故ですが、原因がなんとも言えません。

今回はstampede /stæmpíːd/ を紹介します。西部劇『赤い河』を観たことがある方はご存知の単語だと思います。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「（人が）右往左往して逃げ惑うこと」「＜人・家畜が＞[…から/…へ]集団で暴走する, 疾走する」とありました。LDOCEは “when a group of large animals or people suddenly start running in the same direction because they are frightened or excited” と定義しています。

同辞書で語源を調べると “American Spanish estampida, from Spanish, “crash”, from estampar “to stamp” とあり、スペイン語で「追突する」を意味する語から派生したことがわかりました。

ガスを抜くときの注意点をもう一度確認しておきたいものです。(amphibian)
