日本で唯一とされていたカマキリの化石が、実は別の昆虫であることが分かりました。

mantis /ˈmæntɪs/ を取り上げます。昆虫を指していることが分かりますが、一体何の種類なのでしょうか。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「カマキリ」とあります。また、Merriam-Websterでは “any of an order or suborder (Mantodea and especially family Mantidae) of large usually green insects that feed on other insects and clasp their prey in forelimbs held up as if in prayer” と定義されています。Oxford Living DictionariesではMid 17th century: modern Latin, from Greek, literally ‘prophet’.と語源がありました。カマキリの獲物を狙う姿が、僧侶のお祈りの姿に似ているという発想が面白いです。

虫の正体は、アメミカゲロウ目トガマムシ科の新種であることが判明しました。和名は「クジコハクトガマムシ」、学名は、俳優の香川照之さんの了解を得て「クジベローサ テルユキイ」と命名されました。(seventh-dan)
