Kyoto University to be sued over Ryukyu remains return
Descendants of a former dynasty in Okinawa Prefecture dating to the 15th century plan to sue Kyoto University to have remains of islanders taken by an anthropologist at the institution returned.
The lawsuit, expected to be filed at the Kyoto District Court on Dec. 4, would be a first in the nation over the repatriation of remains of the Ryukyuan people, according to a team of lawyers for the plaintiffs.
Ryukyuan lived in the Ryukyu Kingdom, covering current-day Okinawa Prefecture and the Amami island chain south of Kagoshima Prefecture.

repatriation /rìːpèɪtriéɪʃən/ を取り上げます。接頭辞のreから考えると返還をさしていると思われます。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「本国送還、帰国」とありました。今となっては本州などと合わせて同じ日本というくくりで考えられる沖縄県ですが、国に帰るという表現を使うと、もとは別の国であったことが感じられます。
LDOCEにはrepatriateで “to send someone back to their own country” や “to send profits or money you have earned back to your own country” と定義されています。稼いだお金などを自分の国に送る仕送りも含まれます。
大学を相手とした遺骨返還訴訟は、アイヌ民族の訴訟に続いて全国では2例目で、琉球民族の遺骨返還を求める訴訟は初めてのことだそうです。（aqua）
