strong suit 復習
こちらカルガリー大学では12月10日からfinal exam期間に入りますが、私の場合、来月の１週目までに締め切りの提出物が幾つか続けて重なってしまい、今週も再び忙しくなりそうです。そして先日は、カナダ人の友人とテストや課題についてchatを交わしていた際、１つ気になる表現がありました。以下が実際の会話です。（私の英語に間違いがあれば簡単に指摘して頂けると有難いです。。）
Ariana: How are your papers coming?
Me: I have 3 papers in total actually, which I have to hand them in by Dec. 10.
I’m working on them and halfway there, so I’ll be all right!
Ariana: Wow, I’m just freaking out about 1 paper. I can’t imagine 3!
Me: Well, since there have been a lotta essay assignments in my classes, I don’t feel challenged to do stuff like academic writing. Writing itself is not my forte, though lol
Ariana: Same. Writing is not my strong suit either.
上記の文脈から 、strong suitは「（自己の）強み」を指すことが分かります。また、suitを使うあたりがnativeなりの表現の仕方であるような印象を受けたので、辞書を用いて調べてみました。
Urban Dictionaryを引くと、“A term derived from card games in which, because of defined superiority or dealt strength, certain card suits become more powerful during a card game. Usually used as metaphor to describe dominant or distinctive qualities of a person, place or thing.” と定義されていました。
以上から、suit には「適している」及び「トランプの組札」などの意義があり、strong suit自体は「強い手札」と訳すことが可能ですが、そこから転じて「（人間の）長所、強み」という隠喩的な解釈に至ったと思われます。ちなみに、逆の「弱み」は weak suitと表せるそうです。（bro-taro-world @ Calgary）
